Part 2: What science has discovered… What we know intuitively

What Science and Intuition Tell Us About Microdosing Mushrooms

Over recent years, microdosing psychedelic mushrooms has become a popular trend, particularly among those seeking cognitive or emotional enhancement without the high associated with standard psychedelic doses. Microdosing involves taking very small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics like psilocybin, the active compound in “magic mushrooms.” Both scientific research and personal intuition about microdosing have driven this practice forward. Here’s a look at what science has discovered and what we can learn using our intuitive gifts.

The Science Behind Microdosing Mushrooms

1. Cognitive and Emotional Benefits

While studies on microdosing are still in their early stages, people have been using mushrooms all over the world in many different cultures and for many years.  Scientific findings are becoming popular and the initial findings are promising. Researchers have found that low doses of psilocybin might enhance cognition and mood. A 2019 study published in Frontiers in Psychology suggested that microdosing psychedelics can boost creativity, attention, and overall psychological well-being. The research indicates that microdosing may help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, potentially helping people manage these conditions without full-on trips.

2. Changes in Brain Connectivity

Psilocybin affects serotonin receptors in the brain, which influences mood, cognition, and perception. MRI studies suggest that psilocybin changes the connectivity between different brain regions, leading to what’s often described as “cognitive flexibility.”  In a very real sense they are helping to rewire and reshape brain, the way we see our world in a more positive manner.

Many individuals report increased creativity and problem-solving abilities after microdosing. Though these effects are more established at full doses, there’s growing evidence that even very low doses can have subtle, positive impacts.

3. Minimal Side Effects with Low Doses

One advantage of microdosing is that it appears to produce minimal side effects, especially compared to higher doses. While full-dose psilocybin experiences often involve altered perception, introspection, and even temporary disorientation, microdosing typically avoids these intense effects. Most users report no significant changes in perception; rather, they might feel a gentle boost in mood or focus without any “high” feeling.

4. Limitations and Placebo Effect

Not all scientific studies have shown consistent benefits of microdosing. Some researchers argue that many perceived benefits could be due to the placebo effect, with participants experiencing positive outcomes simply because they believe the microdosing is helping them. A 2021 study that used placebo controls found that both placebo and psilocybin microdose groups reported similar improvements in mood and cognition. This doesn’t discount microdosing's potential but highlights the complexity of isolating genuine effects from placebo-driven benefits.  Even at low doses it is important to have a well thought out intention for use.  Journaling is a way to connect that intention with your experience and aid in the rewiring of the brain.

What We Intuitively Know About Microdosing Mushrooms

1. A Natural Tool for Self-Exploration

People have intuitively used psychedelics for self-discovery and personal insight for centuries, and microdosing continues this legacy. Many people who microdose describe it as a tool that subtly enhances self-awareness, bringing a sense of mindfulness and presence. While science is still catching up to confirm these subjective effects, the intuition behind microdosing aligns with the historical use of psychedelics as aids in personal growth.

2. Enhanced Creativity and Flow

Artists, writers, and creatives often tout the benefits of microdosing for stimulating inspiration. Many report that it helps them access “flow” states more readily, where they feel focused and fully absorbed in their creative processes. Although science is exploring how psychedelics influence brain function, the subjective experience of increased creativity and flow is an intuitive benefit that users claim time and time again.

3. Improved Emotional Resilience

Microdosing advocates often describe feeling more emotionally resilient, able to face stress or challenging situations with a sense of calm. This intuitive benefit is echoed by anecdotal reports of people feeling more adaptable and less reactive. Although scientific evidence in this area is limited, individuals have long believed that psychedelics can enhance emotional flexibility and stability, and microdosing may carry this benefit even at small doses.  With over 5 years experience working professionally with hundreds of clients,  It's always a wonderful gift for me to hear how many on my clients have had their world changed for the better through the use of this amazing plant medicine.

4. Connection to Nature and Greater Awareness

Some people feel that microdosing allows them to connect with nature or experience a heightened sense of awareness. This intuitive benefit is rooted in traditional psychedelic use, where such experiences were often part of spiritual or healing rituals. While microdosing does not lead to full-blown mystical experiences, many users report a similar, though subtle, feeling of being “more in tune” with their surroundings.

The Intersection of Science and Intuition

While science and intuition sometimes seem at odds, they’re beginning to align around the benefits of microdosing. Scientific studies are uncovering measurable effects on cognition, mood, and mental flexibility, validating some of the long-held beliefs about psychedelics. However, limitations in research, especially around the placebo effect, suggest that individual perceptions and intentions still play a big role in the microdosing experience.

Conclusion

Microdosing mushrooms appears to offer a promising approach to enhancing mood, creativity, and self-awareness. While scientific studies are in their early stages, initial findings support some of the intuitive benefits that microdosing users have long claimed. As research progresses, we may come to better understand the full range of effects that psilocybin has on the mind and uncover even more about this ancient, natural practice. For now, both science and intuition suggest that, when used mindfully, microdosing mushrooms may indeed offer a subtle but valuable boost to mental and emotional well-being.
